APOTAMPKIN

An early historical recording tells the story of Passamaquoddy on the powers of Djédjet. It is told when Dedjet was living among the people of the land that people feared they would become monsters, as all those who became cold, fierce and wild creatures and beasts, had stone or iron stamp or heart in their chest.

Feed mourned the loss of loved ones. So the villagers went out to find where Dedjet played his game near the grave of Passa- maquoddy and saw with a look of fear that a giant had appeared. He saw the Cold One, he had enormous size, his chest and his heart was like stone and he had great teeth which he sharpened on the rock. His breast devoured directly the flesh and all a monster would desire, even the body of a woman. The hunter then turned and confronted them, he saw that the wicked shook his head back as he was told and raised it straight in front of his face laughing. Djédjet had his gun out and shot him, but the monster was faster than the eye. He shot another bullet in his breast, but he was faster than bullets, as he went away. But then Djédjet took a secret bow, shot down a copper arrow and then cut his head off clean.

Menissessook was born with marks and signs across the arms that represented a powerful, mysterious spirit. It is he would travel far to learn how to keep the power and be trained as a shaman or sorcerer, and gain many gifts. The shaman was given the power to walk between two worlds, knowing the secret medicine that cured diseases, and gained the wisdom to keep the balance be- tween the humans and the animals in order to bring peace to the forest forever.
